Engagement Season: Your Wedding Dress Timeline

You said yes — congratulations! Now that the excitement of the engagement is settling in, one of the first questions on your mind is probably: when should I start shopping for my wedding dress? It's a great question, and the answer depends on a few factors including your wedding date, whether you want a custom gown or a ready-to-ship style, and how you plan to shop.

As a bridal consultant who's walked hundreds of brides through this process, I can tell you that having a clear timeline takes so much of the stress out of dress shopping. Here's a season-by-season breakdown to help you feel confident and prepared no matter where you are in your engagement.

12–14 Months Before: Start Exploring

You don't need to buy anything right now — this is your research phase. Start saving inspiration to Pinterest or Instagram. Pay attention to which silhouettes, necklines, and fabrics catch your eye repeatedly. You'll start to notice patterns in what you're drawn to, and that's valuable information.

This is also the time to think about your budget. Wedding dresses range widely in price, and knowing your range early helps narrow the field. At Avery Austin, our gowns range from around $400 to $1,400, with no hidden upcharges for extended sizes or customization.

10–12 Months Before: Start Trying On

This is the sweet spot for dress shopping. You have enough time for a custom order (typically 12–16 weeks for production) plus alterations, but you're not so far out that your style preferences might shift dramatically.

If you prefer shopping in person, book appointments at bridal salons. If you want a more relaxed experience, our Try at Home program lets you try up to three gowns at home for $15 each, with free shipping both ways and seven days to decide. Many brides find that trying dresses in their own space — with their own lighting, their own mirror, and their own people — leads to a more confident decision.

8–10 Months Before: Place Your Order

Once you've found your dress, it's time to order. For made-to-order gowns, production typically takes 12–16 weeks. At Avery Austin, most gowns ship within 8–12 weeks, and we offer Hollow-to-Hem customization (Petite, Standard, or Tall lengths) at no extra charge so your dress arrives closer to your final fit.

When placing your order, use a professional size guide and measure yourself carefully. Ordering the right size from the start minimizes the alterations you'll need later.

4–6 Months Before: Alterations

Even a perfectly sized dress usually needs minor tweaks — a hemming, a bustle, or slight adjustments to the bodice. Plan to start alterations 2–3 months before your wedding, with a final fitting 2–4 weeks out. Your alterations seamstress will want to do the work in stages, so don't wait until the last minute.

If you're ordering a ready-to-ship dress or buying a sample gown, you may have less lead time on the dress itself, but you'll still want the same alterations window.

2 Months Before: Accessories and Final Details

With your dress ordered or in hand, now's the time for accessories. Veils, jewelry, shoes, and undergarments should all be selected and tested with your dress during fittings. Bring your accessories to your alterations appointments so your seamstress can account for heel height when hemming and ensure your veil sits correctly with your hairstyle.

What If I'm on a Shorter Timeline?

Don't panic. Many beautiful gowns are available as in-stock and ready to ship within days. These aren't lesser dresses — they're the same quality gowns, just immediately available in your size. If your wedding is less than four months away, start here and you'll still have time for alterations.

The Bottom Line

The "right" time to start shopping is whenever you feel ready, but a 10–12 month lead time gives you the most options and the least stress. The most important thing is to enjoy the process — this is one of the most memorable parts of wedding planning.
